Nostalgia for a pennyFeb 15, 2010
By Steen I've owned several of these machines, taken them apart to clean and even repaired one that the previous owner had over-torqued the coin mechanism (a bent piece of metal was tweaked to its correct position and all was good again). They are reliable, functional and create a spot of nostalgia that a candy dish can't hope to achieve. The base is cast metal, the coin mechanism is metal, it's a heavy unit for its size. I have never had a globe break. They have soft plastic gaskets at the top and the bottom of the globe to allow enough "give" to tighten properly. I use a quarter to screw and unscrew the top nut, finger tight only. I think the petite size is perfect for a desk; fill it with M&Ms, Reese's Pieces, Jelly Bellies or small hard candies and you have a sanitary means of dispensing treats. The coin mechanism does accept any coin: penny, nickel, dime or quarter. It drops below for you to retrieve without opening or contaminating the candy section. They make a fun gift. Purchasing note: I have not purchased a gumball machine from Amazon; mine were rescued from second hand shops for as little as $3.00, cleaned and given a new life with a friend.

Glass globe fragile. Broke 1st day. too expensive to replaceDec 15, 2009
By S. Arnold This seems to be a great product (heavy duty metal, etc) and it DID have warnings on it (I discovered later) about over-tightening the screw on the globe BUT my globe broke instantly with the slightest hand tightening of the red part on top (warnings were for using tools to tighten). I am very disappointed and the globe costs $15 (not sure about shipping) to replace the glass. We are stuck with a broken machine.

By BookMagnet I bought this as a gift for a seven year old. He absolutely loved it. A fun, unique idea. I just hope it holds up as I've read the reviews of them breaking easily.
Works wellJan 16, 2012
By cher I had bought this gift for my six year niece and she loves it. The bad thing about it is that it doesn't come with gumballs like i thought it did but i found some at a dollar store. There was one issue that i did come across but I don't know if it's happened again. She had put a quarter in it and it got a little jammed but it was fixable. Made a great gift.
