They were first sold in the U.S. in 1918, at that time sold in small, rectangular cardboard cartons. The tins so recognizable today were first introduced in the 1920s to help protect the mints and to stay neatly closed in pockets and handbags.Today, the Altoids line includes mints, sours, and gum. Why Are They Called Altoids? The exact origin of the name is unclear, but it seems that during the 19th century confections were given names employing the -oids suffix to imply a medicinal benefit (Altoids were promoted for more than a century as a "stomach calmative," though of course Altoids provides no medicinal benefit). Smith & Company also marketed several other remedies with –oids in their names, such as Benoids for delicate throats and chests, Zenoids for an easy digestion, Cyphoids to defend your throat, and Notoids antiseptic voice and throat pastilles. | | | Features: | |

Small but intenseJul 29, 2007
By Pool Enthusiast These are samll but intense candies. They are so sour that they will make you pucker. They take a little getting used to. Once you do, however, other candies will seem too sweet. They come in a nice small tin.

Super sour and super tastyMay 31, 2009
By Manish Laxmikant These sours are super sour but really do leave you with a nice sweet and sour tangerine taste. Very refreshing when, say hanging out in a park or during any casual activities. The sourness goes very well with the tangerine. I could go through cans and cans of this and so can my older son. This isn't really going to fatten you, and yet it has satisfaction that goes a long way.
Just keep it dry though. Honestly, I think the ones that get sticky and soft due to age and leeching moisture from the air have their own appeal as chewy sours. Sometimes I like to have them that way too, but I don't see myself really causing the wet squishiness. Maybe I'll toss a opened can someplace where I won't see it for months...

I love theseSep 24, 2007
By Telstar I really like these.
However, they arrived and every single can had the candies melted together in a big mess.
These probably were left outside in the desert ... they certainly were not sent protected in any way.
